Sustainable Living in Byron Bay

Sustainable living is a topic we’re hearing more about these days with clever ideas appearing to overcome the challenges of high electricity prices and environmental concerns for the planet.

Byron Echo - Your Sustainable Community 2014This week’s Byron Shire Echo has a section on sustainable living here on the North Coast of New South Wales. It was impressive to read how many groups, businesses, schools and initiatives there are in this region committed to living well without negatively impacting future generations.

The article on ‘Trends in sustainable home design’ was particularly interesting with examples of how homes can be built smarter and with a variety of new materials to require less heating and cooling. Existing homes can add solar panels or take advantage of new eco-friendly products from paints to flooring.

If you want to learn more about sustainable living there are plenty of courses at Byron Community College on everything from energy efficient house design to bee keeping, permaculture, bush regeneration and tours of sustainable communities.

Farmers Markets around Byron ShireThere are local farmers markets in nearly every village around the shire putting delicious, fresh food well within reach. Low food miles are not a problem here and organic and health foods are readily available.

Living the good life with environmental, social and economic sustainability makes the Far North Coast an inspiring place to be.
