Byron Bay Ocean Swim a Daily Event

Every morning at 8 am you can see a group of hardy folk gathering on the deck of the Byron Bay Surf Club. Some have goggles, snorkels and fins but most just sport swimmers as they troop along the beach toward the Byron Lighthouse until they reach The Pass. From there it’s into the water for a swim across Byron Bay. This impressive feat is repeated daily and some have been doing it for decades!

It’s a great way to start your day and best of all it’s free and anyone can join in. Having the support of knowing experienced swimmers are around you is comforting and if you find you’re not up to the full 1.5 kilometre swim you could always just head in to the beach at any point and walk back. But you may surprise yourself, plus the current usually helps push you along so if you can manage to stay afloat you’ll end up back at Main Beach, proud of your accomplishment and ready for a hearty breakfast to celebrate.

If you start now you’ll be in shape by May when the Byron Bay Ocean Swim attracts entrants from all over Australia with prizes for both the Byron Bay classic swim from Wategos to Main Beach (2 kilometres) for competitors 12 years old and over, and the 800 metre mini swim from Clarkes Beach is open to 9 year olds on up. This charity fundraising event is run by Byron Bay Winter Whales.

The daily Byron Bay ocean swim is a great way to keep fit, make friends and appreciate this beautiful place we call home.
