Byron Bay Roller Derby Girls

Where do sportswomen with bloodthirsty names, knee pads and fishnet stockings collide? In Flat Track Roller Derby competitions! Anyone who enjoyed Drew Barrymore’s film Whip It will understand the appeal of this more than hands on sport. Rough and tumble are all part of the fun and Byron’s Bay Rollers are ready to rumble.

Byron Bay RollersAlthough roller derbies have been around since the 1920s, the current women’s only flat track style started in 2000 and now there are over 80 roller derby leagues across Australia and close to 500 around the globe. Our own Bay Rollers came together in April 2010 and trained where they could from Brunswick Heads Hall to Tweed to Ballina and Lennox, finally finding a home at the Byron Regional Sports Complex on Ewingsdale Road.

As part of the North Coast Derby Coalition, the Bay Rollers will pit their skating skills against the Coffs Coast Derby Dolls this weekend and the Tweed Valley Vixens will go helmet to helmet with the Clarence Valley Roller Derby.
