Spaghetti Circus

If you’ve ever thought about running away to join the circus, here’s your chance. The Spaghetti Circus is hosting an Open Day on Saturday, July 12th and they also offer holiday workshops – a great way to keep the kids entertained over the school break.

The Spaghetti Circus has been teaching circus skills since 1992 when Leoni Mills used her gymnastics background (former champion ranked 4th in Australia) and love of performing to start a circus program at Main Arm School. Now located at the Mullumbimby Showgrounds the Spaghetti Circus has been teaching classes and performing for over over 21 years. What sets it apart from other circus schools is that it’s a not-for-profit community organisation with a volunteer board, run by highly qualified circus professionals.

The top notch circus training offers young people, especially young men, a safe place to take risks and develop teamwork skills. There are currently 360 students enrolled in classes ranging from Toddlinis (babies and their parents) to Mini Noodles and Macaronis, Mighty Minis, Al Dentes to adults. The three day holiday workshops between school terms offer a good opportunity to try out everything from trapeze to mini tramp, tumbling, acrobatics, hula hoops, lyra, juggling, tissue, German wheel and more. Students who have honed their skills may be selected to join the Spaghetti Circus Youth Performance Troupe, which has toured Australia and the world, last year performing to audiences of 75,000 people. Fifty alumni of the Spaghetti Circus have gone on to become circus professionals.

Recent partnerships with other organisations have seen the Spaghetti Circus working with the Mullum Circus Festival  with their next event scheduled for September 2015. They are also hiring out their big top tent to other groups and providing training to young people in setting it up.

If you’re interested in a fun way to keep fit and active, developing circus skills, performing or just enjoying the acts from the audience, check out the Spaghetti Circus at www.spaghetticircus.com. It’s another wonderful and worthy organisation here in Byron Shire.
