06 Mar Mullumbimby Bush Food Trail
The Mullumbimby Community Garden welcomes another great community project, the Madhima Gulgan Rainforest and Bush Foods Trail.
The trail project will run along Saltwater Creek and is a collaboration between members of the Mullum Gardens, Madhima Gulgan Community Association, Rainforest Connections‘ Kelvin Davies and landscape designer Mandy Lisson.
Food and Medicinal plant trails are great tourist attractions in many parts of the world and this one will provide employment, recreational and educational opportunities for community members and visitors. The walk will will include a plant guide and interpretive signs about local flora and its traditional uses in Aboriginal culture.
Kelvin Davies from Rainforest Connections explains, “We will have a walking trail and along that trail we will have plants which have traditional uses. They might have been plants we used for food, or medicine or tools or for creating baskets or other materials.” Davies envisions the project expanding to other creeks combining art and sculpture trails.
The Madhima Gulgan Community Association is a self-managed employment initiative benefiting local Aboriginal people and their families who live in the area. Their name, Madhima Gulgan, means “put track there” and they have been providing bush regeneration in the region since 2008 and have completed dozens of successful bushland projects. The team is looking forward to building this trail as a connection with family history and culture, as well as improving the environment.
The Mullum Community Gardens have been hugely successful bringing skilled gardeners and passionate locals together to plant, grow, harvest and share knowledge about everything from composting to biochar and permaculture. The Mullumbimby Bush Food Trail will add another dimension to that great work.
