There’s something very special about Byron Bay and the Far North Coast of New South Wales. The area seems to attract an interesting and eclectic range of people. There must be something in the water or air here as recent residents often tell of how they were drawn here, attracted to the region at a major crossroad in their lives.
Many talented and even famous folk have made the sea change to Byron’s beaches or the tree change to the beautiful Byron Hinterland. Whether it’s to get away from the stress of city living, recover from a health problem or relationship breakdown or just make a new start in a supportive environment, those who have come and stayed are grateful to be here. And some feel that it’s only right that they give back something in return.
That is where the Northern Rivers Community Foundation comes in. Started in 2004 by a small group of philanthropists who, according to their website (www.nrcf.org.au) “are dedicated to improving the lives of those in our northern rivers communities who are in most need of support.” Bequeaths, donations and the money raised from fundraising events are ethically invested with the pro bono assistance of a professional fund manager. Only the income generated by these investments is used to fund the NRCF’s annual grants program. That way the fund will continue to provide profits to be distributed for future community projects and programs.
Recipients of recent funding rounds have included Riding for the Disabled, Byron Bay Herb Nursery, the Uncle Project, Byron Youth Theatre and many more. In fact $59,000 was given away in 2012 according to NRCF Treasurer, Peter Dean. The next round of funding will begin in September – October 2013 for distribution in 2014.
There are several forms of donation possible and sub-funds to contribute to. For more information about getting involved as a donor or as a community group seeking funding, contact the Northern Rivers Community Foundation on 02 6686 2887, email info@nrcf.org.au or find them on www.facebook.com/northernriverscommunityfoundation.
The good works by the NRCF are more evidence of why the Byron Bay area is such a great place to live. Ed Silk Byron Bay supports and applauds their efforts.
