Sandhills Wetlands: Byron Bay’s new nature haven
Byron Bay’s long-awaited Sandhills Wetlands restoration has officially opened, marking the end of one of the Shire’s largest and most complex environmental projects.
It’s long been said that Byron Bay might just be the yoga and wellness capital of Australia — and it’s not hard to see why. The retreats, the studios, the sunsets, the community… and of course, the incredible teachers. So many great yoga teachers seem to get their start here — or find their way back eventually.
That’s why we were especially excited to see Byron Yoga Centre named the winner of the Yoga & Pilates Services category at the 2025 Australian Small Business Champion Awards.
If you know Byron, you know Byron Yoga Centre. They’ve been part of the fabric of this place since 1988, when John Ogilvie turned his own experience with yoga into something much bigger — a space to share it with others. What started as a small studio has grown into one of the country’s most respected yoga centres, known for its down-to-earth retreats, teacher training, and welcoming vibe.
The award was accepted by Cassie Leturgie, their Marketing Manager, on behalf of John and the whole team. As Cassie said, this win is a reflection of the teachers, the staff, and all the students who’ve walked through their doors over the years looking for balance, healing, or just a bit of space to breathe.
We’re so pleased to see a local business like this recognised on a national stage. With over 5,500 entries and just over 100 winners, this was no small achievement — and one that speaks to the heart, consistency and care the Byron Yoga Centre team brings to everything they do.
Big congratulations to John, Cassie and the whole team. We’re lucky to have you here in Byron!
