03 Jul What is it about Byron Bay?
Byron Bay has long been attracting people who want to get away from it all.
From weekends away from busy city lives, to longer stints to try the slower pace on for size; it’s fair to say, Byron Bay appeals to a whole range of people. From hippies to surfers, backpackers to digital entrepreneurs – there’s something for everyone in this beautiful part of the world.
The Bundjalung people – the traditional custodians of the land – consider the area to be a sacred healing ground. Which explains why so many people are seduced by Byron’s charms and return time and time again to de-stress and re-charge.
When it comes down to it, a visit to Byron is all about getting out in nature and nourishing your soul. Here you can start the day in the surf, followed by a leisurely stroll up to the lighthouse, where, if you’re lucky, you might see a whale cruise by. Alternatively, you could enjoy a rejuvenating yoga class or unwind at a hinterland retreat. As wellness destinations go, Byron is pretty hard to beat.
And then there’s the food. The farmers’ market is at the heart of the Byron Bay community. Enjoyed by visitors and locals alike, this is the place to go to buy healthy produce in abundance. And with many local restaurants supporting local growers, the food on offer in town is nothing short of amazing.
It’s fair to say that Byron is a very different town to its earlier incarnations. The seventies set the tone for a green movement that’s only grown in force over recent years. Today, the various influences come together, resulting in a vibrant community formed of a diverse group of people. But what we share in common is a strong community spirit, a commitment to tread lightly on the planet, a belief in accepting others for who they are, and the importance of being true to yourself.
People the world over, dream about coming to experience the Byron Bay way of life. And who could blame them? It’s an extraordinary part of the world that’s been very quiet over recent weeks. But with restrictions lifting, we’re looking forward to welcoming everyone back, safely, and at a distance.
