A design enthusiast’s guide to Byron

For design lovers with time to explore Byron Bay and beyond, there’s a lot to discover.
Here’s a list of must-sees and the best new local experiences recommended by the team at Ed Silk Byron Bay.

Cape Byron Lighthouse

Designed by colonial architect Charles Harding, Cape Byron lighthouse opened in 1901, with its claim to fame being it’s the brightest lighthouse in the southern hemisphere. Walk up the path at sunrise or sunset and enjoy spectacular 360-degree hinterland and ocean views.

Harvest Newybar

Head south along the Hinterland Way, stopping at Newrybar to pick up freshly baked pastries from Harvest’s historic bakery. While you’re in the village, take a look at what’s on offer at Newrybar Merchants — a collective of local artists and curators of fine goods. You’ll be spoilt for choice!

Habitat Byron Bay

This master-planned community was designed for our region’s growing owner-occupier and passion-based business owners. Now a vibrant commercial and
dining hub in the heart of the Byron Bay Arts & Industry Estate, it’s well worth checking out.

Tweed Regional Gallery

Drive along the winding roads of the lush, green hinterland to Tweed Regional Gallery, a beautifully designed art space and home to the re-creation of Margaret Olley’s Paddington studio. Here, you can soak up magnificent views of Mount Warning from every strategically placed window.

Elements of Byron

Wander along Belongil Beach before catching up with friends for lunch at Elements, a stunning world-class resort architecturally inspired by local, naturally occurring forms such as sand dunes, native trees, and the ocean.

Northern Rivers Rail Trail

The long-awaited Murwillumbah to Crabbes Creek section of the rail trail opened earlier this year. Rent e-bikes from one of the local providers, cruise along the path, freewheel through the glow worm tunnel, and explore the stunning countryside and villages along the way.

The Banya Mullumbimby

A stunning conversion of Mullumbimby’s 1920s bank is now home to The Banya — a new bathhouse experience inspired by the European tradition. Relax and rejuvenate with friends before enjoying drinks, share plates and nutritious staples in the luxurious dining and bar areas.

The Beach Hotel

No visit to Byron is complete without post-beach drinks at the iconic Beach Hotel. Grab a table in the beer garden and enjoy one of the most celebrated views in Australia, surrounded by landscape architecture inspired by the rhythms of nature.

Scuba diving. Kayaking. Whale watching

What better way to feel inspired than getting out on the water — or under it! Book in for a scuba or kayaking adventure and explore the beautiful ocean waters of Cape Byron Marine Park. And with the humpbacks’ southern migration in full swing, there’s never been a better time to encounter the whales out in the bay!

Hotel Marvell

It took a long time coming, but Hotel Marvell is Byron
Bay’s first five-star hotel! This welcoming roof top
bar is perfect for poolside cocktails and pre-dinner
drinks before heading downstairs to Bonito, the hotel’s
acclaimed in-house restaurant led by talented chef Minh
Le, formerly of the Byron at Byron.

Raes at Wategos

Award-winning Raes at Wategos was one of Byron’s first boutique resorts, spas, and restaurants, setting the tone for the new class of luxury we see in town today. Opening in 1994, Raes started life as a beach kiosk, and rumour has it Salvador Dali, a family friend of the original owner, designed the gardens and pool.
