bluefest 2026

Byron Bay Bluesfest

Bluesfest is coming up soon.

It was a surprise for many of us to hear that Bluesfest won’t be going ahead this year.

After it was widely thought last year’s event would be the last, government funding gave it a new lease of life – only for the 2026 festival to be cancelled last week.

For a long time now, Bluesfest has been part of Byron’s event calendar – something people plan around, look forward to, and return to year after year.

Easter in Byron has, for many, meant Bluesfest.

Like a lot of people locally, I’ve been reflecting on what that really represents. Because it’s never just been about the music.

It’s about the atmosphere, the people it brings together, and the way it fills the whole of Byron Shire with a different kind of energy for a few days each year.

A reminder of what makes Byron… Byron

Bluesfest has always been one of those events that captures what people love about living here — or it’s what drew them here in the first place.

A sense of community.
A connection to music, art and culture.
And a feeling of being part of something a little different.

Even if you didn’t go every year, you felt the energy it created.

The atmosphere in town shifted slightly. There was a buzz that carried through Byron, Bangalow, Brunswick Heads — right across the Shire.

Things change — but the essence doesn’t

There’s no doubt the cancellation of Bluesfest is disappointing, particularly for those who had plans to come up for it. The effects will also be felt by many local businesses.

But it’s also a reminder that places like Byron aren’t defined by one event.

The same things that attract people to visit our region – the natural beauty, the slower pace, the sense of community – are still very much here.

An open invitation

If you were already planning to go to Bluesfest, why not come along anyway?

Autumn is one of the best seasons in Byron.

The beaches are still beautiful, the ocean is often at its best, and the hinterland is lush and green.

Plus, there’s no shortage of great places to eat, walk, swim or explore.

And it’s a chance to support the local businesses that have long been part of the Bluesfest story.

Looking ahead

Events will always come and go as they evolve over time.

But what sits beneath Bluesfest – our lifestyle, our community, and our local arts scene – is what continues to make Byron such a special place to live and spend time.

And that hasn’t changed.
